Ep. 244: Dishing Over Dinner

EQ: How do affinity spaces grow out of cracks in our societal foundation and what does their presence indicate about the need for community, connectedness, and commiseration?

Today Annie and Hope discuss what started as a viral TikTok trend celebrating low-effort meals made up of snacks, leftovers, and whatever happens to be in the fridge has evolved into something a little more interesting. Girl Dinner Diaries, a Reddit community that takes the snack-plate concept and turns it into a kind of PostSecret for women, an open confessional where meals become the backdrop for stories about relationships, breakups, divorce, HRT, identity, loneliness, and the everyday absurdities of being a woman.

With very few rules about what constitutes girl dinner or what belongs in the diary, the subreddit offers a surprisingly intimate glimpse into what women are carrying, navigating, and sometimes just trying to get through. We dig into what makes this corner of the internet feel like a space for connection and solidarity, particularly at a moment when women's rights and bodily autonomy are increasingly under attack.

From the global rollback of women's rights to the conversations reignited by the Cornell sexual assault case and the #IAmJaneDoe movement, we consider what women need from one another, where they find spaces to be heard, and why sharing the messy, mundane, and deeply personal parts of our lives can be its own form of resistance.

Do Your Fudging Homework:

  • Hope: being intentional with my morning routines–waking up a little earlier. Coffee, journaling and some kind of spiritual/inspirational/thoughtful text. Currently reading Liturgies for Resisting Empire

  • Annie: engage in community online. It can feel very vapid and shallow sometimes because how well can you get to know people on the internet? Really well, it turns out. I’ve forged some really powerful friendships online that have helped me through tough times. Don’t discount the power of connection, even if it doesn’t look how you expect. We need each other.
